Elizabeth Taylor and Roddy McDowall formed a lifetime friendship from this film. She also became very attached to Donald Crisp who became a father figure for her until his death in 1974. Crisp and McDowall are reunited as father and son as they were in How Green Was My Valley.

There was then no aftermarket for films, as the commercial video recorder had not been marketed, and studios routinely destroyed old negatives and prints of classic films they felt had no worth. The collection consisted of mm prints and over 1,000 videocassettes. The value of the films was conservatively assessed at $5,005,426 by representatives of the movie industry. The actor was not charged and agreed to cooperate with the FBI.

Knowing he and Sara Taylor wanted to get their daughter into the movies, he asked him to bring Elizabeth to the studio. There she was introduced to Lassie and the production resumed. Courage of Lassie is the third of seven MGM films featuring a canine star called Lassie, based on Eric Knight's fictional character. Pal, a male Rough Collie, using the stage name Lassie, appeared as the title character in the first film, Lassie Come Home and as Laddie in its sequel, Son of Lassie. Despite this film's title, the character Lassie does not appear in Courage of Lassie; Pal portrays "Bill", also referred to as "Duke" for part of the movie.
